What is Bromelain?

Bromelain is a group of powerful protein-digesting enzymes found in the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus), discovered in 1957 and widely studied since.

Pharmacological Actions

• Enhances the effect of digestive enzymes (trypsin, pepsin). Relieves heartburn pain and reduces diarrhoea caused by shortage of digestive enzymes.
• In chronic bronchitis, suppresses cough and eases congestion. Helps sinusitis and allergy patients by reducing inflammation and fluid retention in nasal membranes.
• Causes significant reduction in swelling, bruises and pain (both at rest and during movement). Has anti-inflammatory effect on muscles and helps excess fluid drain from muscle injury sites.

Dosage

12 years and above — one to two capsules two times daily in between meals

Drug Interactions

• May increase the effect of antibiotics when used together
• Affects blood clotting — when taken with anticoagulants or anti-platelet drugs, may increase risk of bleeding

Caution

Stop using Bromelain at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (generally mild) may occur in some individuals. Allergic reactions may occur in those sensitive to pineapples.
