Pharmacological Actions

Chitosan displays cationic properties that enable it to bind fatty acids via electrostatic forces. Positively charged chitosan binds to negatively charged fat, bile acids and cholesterol in the intestine, preventing fat absorption. The complexes formed between chitosan and fats are excreted in the faeces without digestion.

Consumption of chitosan reduces body weight, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and glucose while increasing cholesterol excretion. Chitosan also modulates adipokines (leptin, TNF-alpha, IL-6, CRP) — decreasing dietary intake associated with increased serum leptin (appetite suppression) and decreased CRP concentrations.

Dosage

Adult — two to four capsules three times daily, half an hour before meal

Drug Interactions

Should not be consumed within 2 hours of taking fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and lipophilic drugs.

Side Effects

Occasionally gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, loose motion and mild steatorrhea have been reported.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in people with shellfish allergies. Must not be used in patients taking anticoagulants.
