Pharmacological Actions

Anti-Parkinsonian Activity

Mucuna pruriens is a natural source of Levodopa (L-dopa), an important constituent used in Parkinson’s disease — a progressive neurological disorder caused by dopamine shortage. L-dopa crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to dopamine in brain cells. Controls symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and has neurorestorative benefits on degenerating dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Prevents dopamine-producing brain cells from dying through antioxidant activity and dopamine provision. Successfully used for Parkinson’s disease in Brazil and India for many centuries.

Aphrodisiac Activity

Mucuna seed extract increases magnesium content and sperm count in oligospermic cases. Oral administration shows significant improvement in functional impotency and oligospermia. Enhances libido due to its dopamine content.

Dosage

Caution
