About Cycloastragenol (CAG)

Mongolian Milkvetch (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years to delay aging and reduce signs such as wrinkles and fine lines. Cycloastragenol (CAG) is a triterpenoid saponin compound derived from the root and is the main active ingredient.

(i) Increasing Telomerase Activity

CAG is a telomerase activator that increases the length of telomeres — protective caps at the end of chromosomes. Telomeres shorten with every cell division, leading to cell senescence and degradation. Extreme shortening is associated with aging, death and age-related disorders. Telomerase prevents DNA damage by lengthening telomeres.

(ii) Fighting Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress accelerates aging and leads to chronic conditions such as cancer, cardiac disorders and diabetes. CAG is an excellent antioxidant that improves the capacity of naturally existing antioxidants, delaying aging and preventing age-related disorders.

(iii) Inhibiting Formation of Glycation

Glycation products are non-enzymatic proteins associated with tissue aging. CAG eliminates aging effects of glycation by hindering the formation of Glycation Terminal Products (GTPs) — a biomarker for diabetes and aging.

(iv) Protecting Photo-Aging from UV Rays

CAG protects skin from harmful UV ray effects by inhibiting metalloproteinases (which encourage tissue breakdown and lower collagen levels) and reducing beta-galactosidase (an aging marker enzyme induced by UV rays).

Role of Chitosan

Chitosan enhances the bioavailability of cycloastragenol through its mucoadhesive properties, ability to open tight junctions and controlled release capability.

Dosage

Adult — one capsule two times daily on empty stomach

Contraindications

Pregnancy and lactation; patients with cancer or previous history of cancer
