Plant Description

Star anise is native to Southern China, Northern Myanmar and Vietnam. It is a small tree producing a distinctive star-shaped fruit with pointed sections.

Phytochemistry & Actions

Star anise contains shikimic acid, essential oils, phenylpropanoids and sesquiterpenes, including trans-anethole, eugenol, beta-eudesmol, farnesol and beta-caryophyllene. Linalool and other plant compounds contribute to its antioxidant and antiviral activity. Star anise extract may inhibit influenza virus neuraminidase and is traditionally used as an immune-system booster.

Dosage

• 2–12 years — half tablet two times daily for at least five days
