Honokiol Magnolia Bark Extract Supplement

Each capsule contains Magnolia officinalis Bark Extract (Honokiol) 100mg.

Phytochemistry

Honokiol belongs to the class of neolignin biphenols. As a polyphenol, it is relatively small, interacts with cell membrane proteins through intermolecular interactions, and is hydrophobic and readily dissolved in lipids.

Pharmacological Actions

Honokiol readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, offering high bioavailability. Has antidepressant, anxiolytic, antioxidant, anti-HCV and anti-tumour effects.

Effect on CNS

Exerts neuroprotective properties through multiple mechanisms including interaction with GABA receptors. Provides significant anti-stress benefit in moderately stressed adults, promotes neurite outgrowth and neurotrophic effects in cortical neurons. Shortens sleep latency and excites sleep-promoting neurons in the ventrolateral preoptic areas.

Effect on Tumour

Honokiol has shown pro-apoptotic effects in melanoma, sarcoma, leukaemia, prostate, bladder, lung, oral squamous cell carcinoma and colon cancer cell lines.

Dosage

Adult — one to two capsules two times daily after meal

Drug Interactions

May interact with paracetamol, benzodiazepines (additive effect), antiplatelet medications (additive effect). May stimulate corticosterone secretion or increase steroid medication concentrations. May cause sleepiness, drowsiness, vertigo and dizziness in patients taking muscle relaxants.

Contraindications

Renal insufficiency, pregnancy and lactation

Side Effects

Heartburn, shaking hands, perilabial numbness in some individuals.
