Pharmacological Actions

Anti-tumour Activity

Luteolin was tested against five human hepatoma cell lines (HepG2, SK-Hep-1, PLC/PRF/5, Hep3B, HA22T/VGH). Results showed luteolin inhibited hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells by cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase and by apoptosis. (Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan)

Lowering Glucose Absorption

Luteolin inhibits alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase, suppressing postprandial hyperglycemia in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Studies showed a significant decrease in glycemic levels (>50%), 2.5-fold increase in insulin blood levels and elevated pancreatic insulin.

Healthy Weight Maintenance

Luteolin increases PPAR-gamma protein expression to attenuate hepatic lipotoxicity, improving circulating fatty acid levels by enhancing FA uptake genes and lipogenic genes in adipose tissue. Also upregulates genes controlling lipolysis and TCA cycle, reducing adiposity. Increased dietary flavonoid consumption (e.g. luteolin) is associated with weight maintenance.
